Maricopa Mayor Anthony Smith and Chamber of Commerce board president Rusty Akers met last month with Puerto Penasco President Alejandro Zepeda to enhance the ties between the two cities.
The meeting, which occurred on Jan. 22, was meant to cross-promote business and tourism, to see how the two entities can assist each other in those areas.
“The city of Maricopa has a long history as a gateway to Rocky Point,” Smith said. “Our two cities share many of the same problems, interests and opportunities.”
Akers travels to Puerto Penasco frequently as part of a non-profit group Weekend Missions, and was in Puerto Penasco to purchase property for the organization, which will act as a base for its operations.
“The enthusiasm we were greeted with only demonstrates the positive impact relationships like these will have on both sides of the border,” Akers said.
Smith again talked up the potential at the State of the City address Tuesday, saying Rocky Point officials liked the idea of participating in Maricopa’s Salsa Festival in April.
