Access ramps in public places
Mayor Alejandro Zepeda Munro has vowed to begin modifying the city’s public areas so that they will be more accessible to those with disabilities.
The mayor accompanied a group of people in wheelchairs recently so he could see first-hand what challenges they face on a daily basis due to the lack of access ramps. “It is obvious that we must do more to meet the needs of our citizens with special needs”, said Zepeda Munro.
Luis Trujillo, representative for the handicapped said that broken sidewalks and a lack of ramps provoke insecurity and make that segment of the population even more vulnerable and fearful of going out.
Plinio Rivera, Director of Public Works for Puerto Penasco and Isaac Uriarte of Urban Development have been charged with working out a plan for the improvements.

On Saturday, November 28 it seemed that all Puerto Penasco went to the Plaza del Camaron to check out the Taste of Penasco celebration and Iron Chef competition.
The event, which has become one of the event highlights of the year in this city, was a celebration of food, drink and cultural displays of music and dance. The event is a fundraiser for the Lion’s Club of Puerto Penasco and DIF.
Booths were set up around the perimeter of the plaza for restaurants to sell samples of their food. Among participating restaurants were Capone’s, Bryan’s, Cocina de Ramon, Desert Oasis, Candy Cake, Ocean View and Brothers Pizza.
D’lucy Spa had a booth and was even giving massages on site. Music was provided by Andale, and Malena Sanchez’ dance troupe, Malaika entertained attendees. As an added fundraising feature, organizers had a “jail” erected on the stage where they incarcerated several members of the community. Bail was set at $350 dollars for the release of the prisoners, but no one said that people would be allowed to pay money to keep someone in. For more on that, please read the Ramblings.

Director Landagaray receives donation from Brian Martin of Capitola, CAIn a dual demonstration of police brotherhood and community spirit, the City of Puerto Penasco has once more been the beneficiary of generosity originating in an American city.
Retired Captain Brian Martin of the Capitola, California police department, accompanied by his lovely wife Debbie, arrived bearing the gift of bulletproof vests for eleven of our officers.

In June of this year Capt. Martin, who with his wife built a home in Playa Encanto, read in the RPNO about a donation from Scottsdale police veteran Ron Gorski. As a result, Martin contacted this reporter to make arrangements to bring the gift across the border.

With the cooperation of Director Erick Landagaray and Mayor Alejandro Zepeda Munro, border agents were informed of the gift. Puerto Penasco currently has 160 active police officers.

Thank you, Capt. Brian Martin and the Capitola Police Department!
