Best of Luck to Sonoran Desert Tours!

E-mail Print
Congratulations and welcome to the Puerto Penasco business community to Director Jessy Fontes and his colleagues at SDT. SDT offers eco-tours that promote the Sonoran Desert and El Pinacate Reserve, inspiring a respect and understanding of the great natural resources of this region.

At the recent inauguration, held at the Penasco del Sol Hotel, Director Jessy Fontes presented the various tour packages being offered by Sonoran Desert Tours.

An RPNO bow goes out to the folks behind (and in front of) SDT for their apparent preparation. It’s quite obvious that no corners were cut in bringing this service to visitors, students and locals who will surely appreciate another recreational option.

For more information, please visit the SDT Blvd. Benito Juárez entre calle 11 y Blvd. Kino No. 401 local 2, Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico 83550 Tel. 638.388.8500 www.sonorandeserttours.com

Arrested carjackers being held as an example to would-be assailants

Government authorities on all three levels are seemingly committed to proving that they have no intention of allowing thugs to terrorize visiting families and negatively impacting local Tourism, as is evident in the way that four men are being held accountable for two serious assaults on the highway in the month of December.

The band of delinquents was presumably led by Iván de Jesus Bojorquez Ruiz, alias “El Montegarza”. His accomplices have been identified as Oscar Adrian Sotelo Urias, alías “El Güero”, Jose de Jesus Barajas Reyes, alias “El Chuyin” and Alvaro Rios Morales, alias “El Nalgas”.

Despite the fact that the victims of the two crimes were not physically injured, authorities clearly intend to deal with them severely and swiftly, so as to give pause to anyone else thinking the highway used by thousands of tourists each year is fair game to criminals.

Rios Morales has a long criminal history and will most likely not breathe free air for many years to come. Each of the men has been charged with two counts of aggravated violent assault and robbery. They are being held without bail at the local prison.

Mural contest “All Against the Wall” a rounding success for artistic youth

By now we’ve all seen the dramatic and beautiful artwork along Benito Juarez Blvd. where young artists were recently given free rein to express themselves in several distinct categories. What might not be so commonly known is what the murals represent and why they were painted in the first place.

As part of the overall effort to beautify Puerto Penasco, it was only a matter of time before the subject of graffiti was raised. In many cities around the world where have come to realize that curtailing graffiti is easier when young artists are given alternative avenues of self-expression.

Puerto Penasco, in following that lead, has decided that rather than leave graffiti to indicate urban decay, this city will show off the talent of local youth who, for the most part, have a knack for done a wonderful job with the task.

Not satisfied to present young artists with a blank canvas, event organizers established rules that promoted political and social reflection and lots of teamwork.

The competition was open to artists above the age of 12 years. Murals had to be the work of no fewer than 3 and no more than 5 people. The subject of the work was to be related to either the Mexican Revolution, celebrating 100 years in 2010, or selected from a variety of social themes.

The entry fee per team was $300 pesos. All entrants were issued certificates recognizing their participation. The first place winner won $1,000 pesos. Other prizes included dinner in a local restaurant and a sunset cruise.
